Box office estimates for the long Thanksgiving weekend are in, putting Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets back on top after being knocked down a peg by Bond last weekend. According to boxofficemojo.com, the effects-laden tale of wizardry and mystery conjured up another $32.1 million to put it just over the $200 million mark in just three weeks.
In its second week of release, Die Another Day crossed the $100 million mark, proving that James Bond still has box office fire power. The film took in $31 million over the five-day period for a close second-place finish. However, that narrow margin of just over $1 million may turn into a victory for MGM when the final numbers come in.
Sailing in at fourth place, behind Disney’s The Santa Clause 2, is Disney’s Treasure Planet with an estimated $16.5 million. The swashbuckling, animated, sci-fi adventure just managed to nudge out Sony Pictures’ comedy Eight Crazy Nights. Adam Sandler’s animation debut opened to the tune of just over $15 million to round out the top five.
