Backyardigans Goes Undercover in Primetime

The colorful characters in Nickelodeon’s hit preschool series The Backyardigans will give James Bond a run for his money next month as they trot around the globe on a special mission in Super Secret Super Spy, their first hour-long, primetime TV movie. Premiering Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. (ET/PT), the special will take young viewers to London, Switzerland, the Caribbean and Miami as Grammy-winning recording artist Cyndi Lauper performs the movie’s original theme song, ‘The Lady in Pink.’

In each episode of The Backyardigans, five high-spirited neighbors meet in their adjoining backyards and use their imaginations to transport themselves to different locations for epic adventures. Pablo, an energetic, enthusiastic and excitable penguin, is joined by best friend Tyrone, an easy-going, confident young moose. The gang is rounded out by the adventurous Uniqua, a deceptively sweet and girlish hippo named Tasha and a resourceful and shy kangaroo named Austin.

In the movie, Pablo become the 007-esque Agent Secret and takes on an important international mission to protect the world from evildoers. Tasha takes on the role of Miss T, the head of the International Super Spy agency who directs Agent Secret to stop the villainous Lady in Pink (Uniqua) from stealing three top-secret containers. Tyrone is the Lady in Pink’s hapless henchman, and Austin plays Agent Secret’s undercover contact, who dons new disguises in each locale.

Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release The Backyardigans: Super Secret Super Spy on DVD on Tuesday, Sept. 18. In addition to the movie, the dics will offer two other Backyardigans adventures, “The Secret of Snow” and the never-before-seen episode, “A Giant Problem.” Bonus features will include music videos and a behind-the-scenes featurette on Lauper’s musical involvement.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 3, Nickelodeon will roll out clips and other Super Secret Super Spy content across its various preschool platforms, including Nick Jr. Video, Time Warner’s Video On Demand service and partner wireless carriers. The Nick Jr. website (www.nickjr.com) will launch an interactive 3D adventure game and other activities Friday, Aug. 31 to complement the premiere of the primetime special.
