South Park, Casper, Re-Animated on DVD

The complete 10th season of Comedy Central’s South Park hits disc today, along with two made-for-TV Cartoon Network movies populated with spirited cartoon characters. Casper’s Scare School raises hairs and tickles funny bones with the voices of Jim Belushi, Phyllis Diller, Bob Saget and Dan Castellaneta, while live-action and animation mix it up in Re-Animated: The Movie, which launched the regular series Out of Jimmy’s Head.

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season is a three-disc set with 14 episodes form the Emmy-winning show about foul-mouthed kids living in a backward town in Colorado. The season that saw the death of Chef also features the episode ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft,’ which is nominated for an Emmy this year. Other stand-out episodes include ‘Smug Alert,’ in which hybrid vehicle ownership has an adverse effect on the town, and the two-part ‘Cartoon Wars,’ which takes aim at FOX’s animated series Family Guy. The Paramount Home Entertainment release also offers mini-commentaries by series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and lists for $49.99.

Casper’s Scare School, which premiered on Cartoon Network last October, offers a CG-animated update of the friendly ghost property launched by Harveytoons roughly 60 years ago. Produced by Classic Media and animated by Crest Animation in India, the movie features new songs from Captain and Tennille as our transparent little hero learns to start scaring the ‘fleshies’ by enrolling in a special school run by a two-headed headmaster (Saget and Belushi) who has plans to take over the world. Armed with the power of friendliness, Casper must foil the evil plot with some help from Ra, a mummy with unraveling issues, and Martha, a zombie who can’t keep her limbs on. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Mark Gravas, creator and director of Nickelodeon’s animated TV series Yakkity Yak, the Genius Products release carries a suggested retail price of $16.95 from.

Re-Animated: The Movie stars Dominic Janes (TV’s E.R.) as a young boy who has an accident involving an amusement park trolley and ends up getting the frozen brain of a famous cartoonist named Milt Appleday played by Fred Willard. As Jimmy starts seeing and Appleday’s cartoon characters all around him, he becomes the target of Appleday’s evil son (Matt Knudsen), who plots to steal the brain back. Paul Reubens, Tom Kenny, Ellen Greene and Brian Posehn lend their voices to the various animated characters in the movie, which was created and written by Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends scribes Adam Pava and Tim McKeon. New York-based filmmaker Bruce Hurwit directed the production of Renegade Animation, Appleday Pictures and Cartoon Network. The disc lists for $14.98 and includes additional scenes, a behind-the-scenes/special effects documentary and commentary by the creators and director.
