BRB Internacional is heading to MIPCOM Jr. in Cannes next month with a first look at episodes of its new animated series, Papawa. Produced in Catalonia by Screen 21, the HD show employs cut-out animation with photographic textures to take viewers to an island of dreams populated by characters out of a nightmare.
Aimed at kids 6-10, Papawa consists of 104 7-milute episodes and is a co-production of Screen 21, Televisio de Catalunya (TVC) and France’s 2 Minutes. The show is inspired by a Catalonian theater group named Tricicle, and follows a sitcom narrative structure while playing with sound and music.
Like Fantasy Island, the series is set in a place where visitors can make their dreams come true. However, the islanders have the uncanny ability to turn any dream into the worst nightmare. Each of the island inhabitants has a special power and emits peculiar Papawian sounds in lieu of spoken language. The show was presented last week at Cartoon Forum in Girona, Spain, but buyers attending MIPCOM Jr. will get the first look at actual episodes. The market will take place Oct. 6-7.
The first season of Papawian will be available for broadcast in the fall of 2008, following on the heels of BRB’s recent animated hits Bernard, The Imp and Angus & Cheryl. For more information, check out www.papawa.com.
