Mark Tatulli’s dark comic strip Lio is being developed as a live-action feature film through a deal between producer David Kirschner and Universal Syndicate, reports Daily Variety. Kirschner, whose credits include the animated American Tail franchise and Universal’s Curious George feature, will produce the Lio pic with producing partner Corey Sienega. The duo’s previous collaborations include Miss Potter, Frailty and the upcoming Martian Child.
The Lio comic debuted in 2006, introducing Sunday paper readers to an odd, spiky-haired kid who keeps company with a giant squid, the grim reaper and other macabre pals. The strip was inspired by such darkly comedic favorites as The Addams Family TV series and the Tim Burton feature Edward Scissorhands.
Though no vfx studio has be attached yet, the movie is sure to offer its share of character animation work and other effects. On board as exec producers are Bridget McMeel and John Glynn, heads of Universal Press Syndicate’s film and television division, Amuse.
