Sony Pictures Home Entertainment makes some CG waves with today’s release of the animated feature Surf’s Up on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The movie comes with a number of extra features, including filmmaker audio commentary, a three-part making-of documentary and music videos.
Directed by Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) and Chris Buck (Disney’s Tarzan), Surf’s Up employs a documentary style to take viewers inside the world of competitive penguin surfing. Chasing his dream of surfing superstardom, up-and-comer Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf) leaves his frigid surroundings and heads south to the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship. Borrowing from his ‘Dude’ character in The Big Lobowski, Jeff Bridges lends his voice to Big Z, a washed-up pro who teaches Cody some important life lessons. The voice cast also includes Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder, James Woods and Mario Cantone.
Also accompanying the movie on disc is an all-new ChubbChubbs animated short titled The ChubbChubbs Save Xmas. Directed by Cody Cameron and produced by Kirk Bodyfelt, the four-minute short premiered in select theaters with the live-action comedy feature Daddy Day Camp back in August. Cameron, David Feiss and Jurgen Gross wrote the story, which finds the hungry, lovable little aliens and their buddy, Meeper, on a quest to find a new home after being kicked off their planet. When the motley crew ends up on the North Pole, Santa Claus offers them a job to deliver toys for the holidays, which has disastrous results.
In addition, the release offers the original 2003 Academy Award-winning short The ChubbChubbs, a Lauryn Hill music video and three interactive games. The Blu-ray edition carries a suggested retail price of $38.95.
