Twentieth Century Fox has been slowly leaking casting news regarding it’s live-action feature film based on the Dragonball series of comics, animated productions and video games, and has apparently saved the biggest bomb for today. The studio told The Hollywood Reporter that international film star Chow Yun-Fat has been cast to play Master Roshi.
Yun-Fat’s character is a mentor and fighting coach to Goku, the young hero being played by Justin Chatwin (The Invisible). Emmy Rossum (Poseidon, Phantom of the Opera) recently joined the cast as Bulma, the female lead, and James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer series) will portray the evil Lord Piccolo.
Dragonball began as a manga created by Akira Toriyama and published under Shueisha’s Jump Comics label. The books spawned a successful animated series, nearly a dozen animated movies and a line of video games that has seen more than 10 million units shipped to date.
The Dragonballl movie is being directed by James Wong (The One, Final Destination, Final Destination 3) and produced by Stephen Chow, the writer, director and actor behind the international hit Kung Fu Hustle. Working from his own screenplay, Wong will be shooting the film in Mexico City and Los Angeles.
