The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has awarded Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille Best Animated Feature Film. The culinary rodent pic from director Brad Bird beat out DreamWorks Animation’s Bee Movie and Twentieth Century Fox’s The Simpsons Movie. Due to the ongoing writers’ strike, the winners of this year’s contest were announced Sunday evening during a low-key Hollywood press conference lacking in stars and acceptance speaches.
Persepolis from directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud was the only animated work up for Best Foreign Language Film. The black-and-white true storybut lost to director Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France and U.S.) from Miramax/Paramount Vantage. The drama also earned Schnabel the Globe for Best Director. The other contenders for Nest Foreign Language Film were 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Romania) from IFC First Take, , The Kite Runner (U.S.) from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Classics, and Lust, Caution (Taiwan) from Focus Features.
Amy Adams, star of Disney’s Enchanted, was up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture’Comedy or Musical, but lost the Globe to Marion Cotillard from the Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose. In addition, the Enchanted song ‘That’s How You Know’ (music and lyrics by Alan Menken) was bested int eh Best Original Song category by Parl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder’s “Guaranteed” from Into the Wild.
Focus Features’ Atonement won Best Picture-Drama over Universal’s American Gangster, Focus Features’ Eastern Promises, The Weinstein Co./MGM’s The Great Debaters, Warner Bros.’ Michael Clayton and Miramax/Paramount Vantage’s No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood.
Warner Bros.’ Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tookBest Picture-Musical or Comedy over Sony Pictures’ Across the Universe, Universal’s Charlie Wilson’s War, New Line’s Hairspray, Fox Searchlight’s Juno. Johnny Depp also recieved the acting award for playing the title role in the gory musical.
