Star Wars fans eagerly awaiting the debut of the upcoming CG-animated Clone Wars television series may have an opportunity to see it on the big screen as early as this spring. According to www.action-figure.com, there’s talk of the first three or four episodes being bundled together and released theatrically as a feature in the U.K. and perhaps elsewhere. The site notes that this has been confirmed by a couple of Star Wars licensees other than Hasbro, which is being secretive about its upcoming line of toys based on the TV series.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars will take place between the second and third episodes of the film saga, filling in gaps and revealing events that lead to the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire. Fans will learn more about Boba Fett, General Grievous and other characters in the process, but other details of the show are being closely guarded by Lucasfilm.
In May of last year, StarWars.com posted a trailer for the series, which appears to feature a hybrid of the stylized 2D work done by Genndy Tartakovsky and crew on the Cartoon Network Clone Wars microseries and the more photo-realistic animated elements seen in the three prequel films. The series of 22-minute episodes is being produced by Lucasfilm Animation’s facilities in California and Singapore, and is slated to debut sometime in 2009, though rumors have it coming as soon as this September.
