Comedy Central Develops New Toons

Comedy Central today unveiled its 2008-2009 development slate, which includes three new animated shows that may end up joining South Park and Drawn Together. In addition to the previously announced Gay Robot cartoon from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison, the network has put in a pilot order for an untitled Snoop Dogg project, and is putting together a script for an animated comedy titled Gypsy Cab. Other shows in the pipeline include an untitled Andy Richter comedy and medieval fantasy spoof titled Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.

Gay Robot will be a half-hour series consisting of two 11-minute stories that follow the exploits of a homosexual automaton who lives with college friends Nick, Pat and Matt. Madcap humor ensues as the guy party their way through life while trying to find their place in the world. The voice of Gay Robot is being supplied by Nick Swardson (Reno 911!, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), who is also co-writing with Aaron Lee, co-creator of the short-lived animated MTV series Where My Dogs At? Sony TV is sproducing the project with Happy Madison.

The half-hour Snoop Dogg show will portray the rapper as an animated 15 year-old growing up in 1980s Long Beach, Calif. Viewers will be given a comical look at growing up in the hood as its young hero deals with family, school and the challenges of the streets. Snoop is exec producing with Tom Lynch, creator of Cartoon Network’s animated Andre Benjamin series Class of 3000.

Taking a page from the Dr. Katz playbook, Gypsy Cab is an animated series consisting of two 11-minute stories that revolve around the driver of a dilapidated cab and his passengers, portrayed by various stand-up comedians. While most of the action will take place in the cab, the show will also visit the cab depot, and the driver’s apartment. The show is created by Jordan Rubin, who is writing the pilot with Aaron Lee. Rubin, Lee and Generate’s Dave Rath are exec producers.

Krod Mandoon and The Flaming Sword of Fire is the only property with a series green light so far. After the death of his mentor, Arcadius, Krod reluctantly becomes the last great hope in the fight against the evil Dongalor. Spoofing the Lord of the Rings saga and other medieval fantasy favorites, the show is written by Peter Knight and exec produced by Knight, Keith Samples, Brad Johnson, Courtney Conte and Flody Juarez.
