As part of its Comic-Con ’08 plans, ASIFA-Hollywood will offer a behind-the-scenes look at PBS’s new primetime cartoon based on the radio show Car Talk. Other activities will include an exploration of animation production on a shoestring budget, a panel on the state of the animation industry, a screening of the worst cartoons ever and a discussion with independent animation legend Ralph Bakshi.
Beloved animation director and ASIFA-Hollywood VP Tom Sito will host ‘Click & Clack’s As the Wrench Turns’ on Thursday, July 24 at 10 a.m. in room 2. He’ll be joined by Bill Kroyer, Stephen Silver, Floyd Norman, Helen Jen, Tom Minton and Howard Grossman in discussing the process of bringing the long-running radio program to the screen by way of animation.
ASIFA-Hollywood board member Larry Loc will then share tips on low-budget toon creation at 2 p.m. Do-it-yourself animators looking to get the most bang for their buck will want to catch ‘Animation On a Shoestring’ in Room 30CDF.
On Friday, July 25th, a group of animation professionals will discuss current trends in the business as ‘State of the Animation Industry kicks off at 6 p.m. in room 3. The program will be followed at 8 p.m. by an Annie Awards party to announce the 2009 Winsor McCay Award honorees. The private party is open to all Annie Award nominees.
Friday’s festivities will conclude with ‘Worst Cartoons Ever’ at 9:30 p.m. The hour-long program hosted by ASIFA-Hollywood treasurer and animation historian Jerry Beck will feature a collection of jaw-dropping animated faux-pas and just plain awful cartoons in room 6CDEF.
On Saturday, July 26, Animation maverick Ralph Bakshi will appear in person to address the issue of what it means to be an artist in animation today. Starting at 4:30 p.m. in room 10, ‘Artists Only: A Discussion With Ralph Bakshi’ will be moderated by Stephen Worth, director of the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive. A private party for Bakshi’s friends and former employees will follow.
Members of the ASIFA-Hollywood board of directors will be on hand at the organization’s redesigned booth (#5334). Visitors will be able to obtain information on membership, the Annie Awards and the Animation Archive. The Animation Archive Database, which includes more than 3,000 animated films and 10,000, images will be demonstrated as well.
