Cartoon d’Or Finalists Named

CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film, has announced the five finalists for the coveted Cartoon d’Or prize at the19th edition of Cartoon Forum, taking place Sept. 16-19 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Films from France, Belgium and the U.K. are among the contenders to be presented to an audience of more than 700 European animation professionals. The screening will take place on Thursday, Sept. 18 during the official Cartoon d’Or Award ceremony.

This year’s finalists are Vincent Bierrewaerts for The Bridge (Le Pont), Belgium/France; Arnaud Demuynck for Breakout (L’Evasion), Belgium; Pierre-Luc Granjon for The White Wolf (Le loup blanc), France; Benjamin Renner for A Mouse’s Tale (La queue de la souris), France; and Matthew Walker for John and Karen, U.K. The winner will receive financial aid for his next project, in addition to the trophy.

The Cartoon d’Or 2008 jury is composed by directors Enzo D’Al’ from Italy, Raul Garc’a from Spain and Michael Coldewey from Germany. The competition is exclusively reserved for winners of awards from one of CARTOON’s nine partner animation festivals in Europe, including Anima in Belgium, Animadrid in Spain, Encounters Short Film Festival in the U.K., Annecy in France and Trickfilm Festival Stuttgart in Germany.

Cartoon Forum is an annual confab designed to support the co-production, financing and distribution of European animation for television and new media platforms. This year’s Cartoon d’Or is supported by the EU MEDIA Programme and the ceremony gala will be hosted by SWR, the public broadcasting company for the southwest of Germany.
