Those who watched the ’80s cartoon series as kids will be happy to know that the G.I. Joe property is growing up as well. In addition to Paramount’s live-action movie set for Aug. 7, 2009, fans will get an animated web series made for adults. During a Comic-Con panel in San Diego, it was announced that acclaimed comic-book scribe Warren Ellis is writing G.I. Joe: Resolute, a series of five-minute animated episodes that will eventually be compiled to form a 60-minute DVD feature.
Producer Joaquim De Santos told Comic-Con attendees that G.I. Joe: Resolute will update the ’80s series with an anime twist inspired greatly by Ghost in the Shell. Fans then got to see some footage from the new toon. The fairly violent, PG-13 sequence debuted at last week’s Joe-Con.
Directed and produced by Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing, The Mummy) and written by Stuart Beattie (30 Days of Night, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), the live-action G.I. Joe movie stars Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Rachel Nichols, Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui, Ray Park and Sienna Miller. No footage was screened during the panel, but it was announced that young actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Lookout, Brick) will appear as Cobra Commander.
