Billion-Dollar Knight, Madea On Top

The Dark Knight is the fourth film to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Warner Bros. announced the breakthrough Friday, noting that the film has grossed $533 million domestically and about $567 million internationally. The film hit the mark after being re-released Jan. 23, according to Variety.

The news came during an Oscar weekend that saw Tyler Perry’s comedy Madea Goes to Jail top the box office with $41 million. That set a record both for writer-director-producer Perry and distributor Lionsgate.

The only other new major release, the comedy Fired Up, grossed $6 million and came in ninth for the weekend behind a roster of strong holdovers including Taken, Slumdog Millionaire, Friday the 13th, He’s Just Not That Into You, Confessions of a Shopaholic and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Animated feature Coraline grossed $11 million to bring its domestic total to $53.4 million.

The other billion-dollar grossers are Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
