It’s the battle of the dramas this weekend at the box office, with debuts Fighting, Obsessed and The Soloist facing off.
Obsessed, a crime thriller from Sony/Screen Gems starring Idris Elba, Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter, leads the pack and opens in 2,400 theaters. It’s followed closely by the action drama Fighting, a Rogue Pictures release starring Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard that is set to open at more than 2,100 theaters.
Paramount-DreamWorks at last opens The Soloist, which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. The film, originally due for release last fall, is opening at about 1,800 theaters.
Opening in limited release is The Mutant Chronicles, a sci-fi action movie from Magnolia, starring Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich.
The lone animated film out there, DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens in 3-D, remains a strong contender as it enters its fifth weekend of release with a strong chance to finish again in the top five. The film so far has grossed about $164 million domestically.
