New Zealand visual-effects shop Weta Digital has formed a new working group to apply advanced computer graphics research to movie production.
The group, called Transfx, will be headed up by Sebastian Sylwan, who has left his post as senior industry manager for film and television at Autodesk to become head of research at Weta, Variety reports.
Sylwan told the trade paper the group seeks to develop CG techniques that can be applied broadly to visual effects shots to replace the current common method of cobbling together one-time-only solutions for each shot.
Transfx will work directly on Weta projects such as the upcoming Peter Jackson film The Lovely Bones. The VFX house also is working on James Cameron’s Avatar and Steven Spielberg’s Tintin project.
