X-Men Origins: Wolverine blew away the competition at the box office this weekend, slashing and cutting its way to an $87 million domestic take.
The opening was the second strongest for the series, coming in behind the $102 million X-Men: The Last Stand pulled in on its five-day Memorial Day opening weekend in 2006 and just ahead of X2‘s $85 million opening in 2003.
The film ‘ the widest opening ever for a Fox film ‘ held up well from day to day, taking in $35 million on Friday and dropping only 15% on Saturday, according to Variety.
Coming in second place was Warner Bros. and New Line’s Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which earned $15.3 million.
DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens fought its way back into the top five, taking in $5.8 million in sixth weekend of release, for a domestic total gross of $182 million.
The animated Battle for Terra, the weekend’s only other new release, opened in 12th place with a gross of $1.1 million.
