Up Rises to top of Box Office

Up surprised no one by climbing to the top spot at the weekend box office.

The highly anticipated Pixar-Disney 3-D animated feature took in an impressive $68 million, only slightly behind the studio record, set by Finding Nemo with a $70 million opening in 2003. It’s slightly ahead of the $63 million WALL’E took in its opening weekend last year.

Hanging on in second place was last weekend’s champ, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. The Fox sequel, which stars Ben Stiller, grossed $25 million this weekend to bring its 10-day total domestic gross to $105 million.

In third place was director Sam Raimi’s return to horror, Drag Me to Hell. The well-reviewed genre movie, released by Universal, took in $16.6 million.

Familiar faces filled in the rest of the weekend race, with Terminator Salvation grossing $16.1 million, Star Trek beaming up $12.8 million, Angels & Demons with $11.2 million, Dance Flick at $4.9 million, X-Men Origins: Wolverine scratching up $3.9 million, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past at $1.9 million and 10th-place Obsessed racking up $665,000.

DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens fell to 14th place, taking in $315,000 and bringing its domestic gross to $194 million.

So far, Star Trek is the king of the box office this year, being the only film to pass the $200 million mark, having so far grossed $209 million.
