Up Stays Atop Box Office

Disney-Pixar’s Up had enough lift this weekend to edge out the competition and retain its box office crown.

The animated 3-D film, which has earned rave reviews from critics, took in $44.2 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its 10-day total to $137 million. The film is steadily on track to become only the second film this year to pass the $200 million domestic mark.

Falling just short of the crown was the Warner Bros. comedy The Hangover, which opened to a strong $43.3 million.

Land of the Lost, an update of the classic 1970s Sid and Marty Krofft TV series, opened in third with $19.5 million.

A strong crop of holdovers filled out the rest of the top ten. In fourth was Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, with $14.6 million, followed by Star Trek with $8.4 million, Terminator Salvation at $8.1 million, Drag Me to Hell at $7.3 million, and Angels & Demons with $6.5 million.

Fox Searchlight’s My Life in Ruins opened in ninth place with $3.2 million, while Dance Flick rounded out the top ten with an even $2 million.

So far, Star Trek is the only film this year to gross more than $200 million at the box office, though DreamWorks Animaton’s Monsters vs. Aliens is close to the mark at $194 million. Monsters, still in release, earned $275,000 this weekend.
