Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has passed Pixar’s Finding Nemo to become the all-time highest-grossing animated movie in overseas markets.
Nemo was released in 2003, grossing $339 million domestically and $524.9 percent overseas, according to the website Box Office Mojo.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the third film in the series from Blue Sky Studios and Fox and the first in 3-D, has grossed $548 million in overseas territories. Domestically, it has grossed about $184 million, making its overseas gross a whopping 75 percent of its worldwide total of $732 million.
One of the key factors in the film’s success overseas is the 3-D format. Moviegoers are willing to pay a bit extra for the 3-D experience, helping to boost the overall bottom line number.
Disney-Pixar’s Up, also a 3-D release, is showing signs of reaping a similar benefit. The film has grossed $286 million domestically and is just beginning its run in several major overseas markets.
In terms of worldwide box office receipts, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 2 remains the champ with $441 million domestic and $478 million overseas for a total of $919 million.
