HRTv’s Ponies Demonstrates Real-Time Animation

HRTv’s is bringing its new animated project Pebble Bay Ponies to Cartoon Forum to show off the company’s new approach to creating animated content using game engine technology.

The company, the TV arm of Hibbert Ralph Animation, has so far made a six-minute pilot using Redboard, its proprietary 3D storyboarding application. Redboard uses game engine technology to preview sets and backgrounds in real time, improving the CG workflow. The company’s goal is is produce the entire series as machinima, using Epic’s Unreal Engine to let animators work on the show in real time.

The series is directed by Kim Burdon and written by Di Redmond. The series is aimed at girls 4-6 and follows the adventures of six ponies with different talents who work in the Pebble Bay rescue center.

‘Not only is Pebble Bay Ponies a great children’s TV series, we can also offer innovative ways of producing it cost-effectively by using this new technology to achieve a super-fast result with high production values,’ says Jerry Hibbert, HRA founder and director. ‘This makes Pebble Bay Ponies a truly sellable proposition for networks so we’re excited to see reactions at the Cartoon Forum.’

Cartoon Forum is set to take place in Stavenger, Norway, from Sept. 22-25.
