Ice Age 3 No. 3 All Time at Intl. Box Office

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has become the third-highest grossing film of all time in international markets.

According to Variety, on Sept. 8 the film passed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone‘s mark of $659 million, having earned $660.4 million.

Still in release, Ice Age will add to its lead over the boy wizard’s first outing, but has a long way to go to challenge the two top films: Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

A major factor in the film’s performance is the popularity of 3-D. The film also performed well in not just the major markets like France, Germany and the United Kingdom, but in mid-size and smaller markets such as Mexico, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium.

The third film in the trilogy far outstripped its predecessor, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, outgrossing it in international markets by more than $200 million.
