Laika Lays Off 63 in CG Dept.

Portland-based Laika, the animation studio behind the stop-motion hit Coraline, has laid off 63 people in its computer animation department

The move is a result of the studio’s decision to specialize in stop-motion animated features, according to a report in The Oregonian. The studio is not dropping CG entirely, and a CG project remains in the company’s development docket.

The studio will continue to use CG to augment elements of its stop-motion films and will continue to use CG in its commercial projects.

The moves reduce the company’s workforce from 243 to 180. The company laid off in December 65 employees after dropping plans for a CG movie called Jack and Ben’s Animated Adventure.
