Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the most recent 3-D animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation, topped the box office with an opening weekend gross of $30.1 million.
The film dominated an otherwise mild weekend for moviegoers, with the second place finisher ‘ the new Steven Soderbergh film The Informant! ‘ taking in $10.5 million.
Cloudy‘s performance was the best-opening ever for an SPA film, topping the $23.6 million opening for Open Season, nearly three years ago. Open Season went on to gross $85 million domestic and $197 million worldwide.
Falling to third place was last weekend’s top movie, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, with $10.1 million. The new Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy, Love Happens, opened in fourth place with $8.5 million, while the heavily hyped horror film Jennifer’s Body opened in fifth place with a $6.8 million weekend gross.
Focus Features’ stop-motion animated feature 9 came in sixth place, grossing about $5.5 million in its second weekend of release. The film has to date grossed about $22.8 million.
