How well will Meatballs stand up to Fame? We’ll find out this weekend, with the remake of the dance classic is one of three major new releases looking to dethrone last weekend’s box office champ, Sony’s animated Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
Fame gets the week’s widest release, opening at more than 3,000 cinemas. Also new this week is the sci-fi film Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis and adapted from the Top Shelf graphic novel, in 2,700 locations; and the sci-fi/horror film Pandorum from Overture Films, out in 2,400 theaters.
Los Angeles area animation fans have some additional tasty treats to check out.
Bill Plympton’s award-winning short film Horn Dog will be playing Friday-Sunday at the NuArt Theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard. The film plays twice a day, before the feature film We Live in Public, at noon and 2:30 p.m. Ticket information can be found at http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/LosAngeles/NuartTheatre.htm.
Also, Sundance honoree Mary and Max is getting a limited, Academy-qualifying theatrical run. The film is playing starting this weekend at the Laemmle Town Center 5 theater in Encino, screening at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Ticket information can be found at http://laemmle.com/viewtheatre.php?date=09252009&thid=7.
