Studio Ghibli Announces Bamboo Cutter

Acclaimed anime maker Studio Ghibli’s next film will be Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), an adaptation of the classic Japanese fairy tale to be directed by Isao Takahata.

The film, due out next year, will be the first film in a decade directed by studio co-founder Takahata.

The classic tale, which dates to the 10th century, is about a princess from the moon who is found inside a bamboo plant. Many suitors pursue her, with the emperor of Japan giving up his immortality for her, but she eventually returns home.

The report on the film, appearing on the website Asian News Pulse, also mentions that Studio Ghibli’s other founder, Ponyo director Hayao Miyazaki, is in talks with the studio to make two feature films in the next two years.
