The Golden Globes will nominate five films for its Best Animated Feature award this year, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voting last week to up the number of nominees from three.
The Globes’ rules now state that there will be five nominees in the category if 12 or more films qualify, three nominees for eight or more but less than 12 qualifiers, and no award if fewer than eight films are submitted. The HFPA’s rules also were amended to state that to qualify features must be 70 minutes or longer and be no more than 25 percent live action.
The Globes nominees will be announced Dec. 15. The awards will be presented Jan. 17 during a ceremony hosted by Ricky Gervais and broadcast live on NBC.
The move comes shortly after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 20 films had been submitted for consideration for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The Academy’s rules call for five nominees when at least 16 films qualify.
