Critics Admire Mr. Fox; AFI Likes Up, Coraline

The two most-watched critics groups found common ground when it came to animated features in their annual year-end lists.

The New York Film Critics gave their best animated feature film honor to Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, and gave an actor honor to George Clooney for his work in both Fantastic Mr. Fox and Up in the Air.

The Los Angeles Critics also picked Fantastic Mr. Fox as its top animated feature, giving a runner-up nod to the Disney-Pixar film Up. Fantastic Mr. Fox also earned a runner-up spot for Alexandre Desplat in the music/score category.

The L.A. group also honored the sci-fi film District 9‘s director Neill Blomkamp with its New Generation award. District 9 also won for production design, with James Cameron’s Avatar the runner-up.

Meanwhile, the American Film Institute released its list of the top-ten films of the year, naming two animated features: Coraline and Up.

And finally, veteran Time magazine film critic Richard Corliss lead his top-ten film list of the year with three animated features, in order: Princess and the Frog, Up and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
