Up On List of Broadcast Critics’s Best Picture Contenders

Another awards-giving group has lifted Up into the rarefied air of this year’s top releases, with the Broadcast Film Critics Association nominating the Disney-Pixar animated feature for best picture.

The film was among 10 films nominated for the honor, with the list also including James Cameron’s visual-effects smorgasbord Avatar.

Up also earned a nomination for best original screenplay, while the stop-motion film Fantastic Mr. Fox earned a best adapted screenplay nod.

Both films were among the five nominees for best animated feature, joined by Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline and Princess and the Frog.

The nominees for best visual effects are Avatar, District 9, Nine, The Road and Star Trek.

The Princess and the Frog scored additional nominations in the music categories, earning two nominations for Randy Newman for best song with ‘Almost There’ and best score. Up‘s Michael Giacchino also was nominated for best score.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony set for Jan. 15 at the Hollywood Palladium.
