It’s official: Avatar has passed Titanic to become the highest-grossing film in history.
The James Cameron film’s Monday gross of $3.2 million domestic and $17 million foreign finally put the 3D CG-motion capture spectacle over the top.
Avatar now stands atop the worldwide box office chart with $1.86 billion in ticket sales, ahead of the $1.84 million mark set by Titanic, Cameron’s previous film.
Avatar still has a ways to go to reach the top spot on the domestic charts. Its current total of $555 million remains in second place to Titanic‘s $600 million domestic mark.
At the rate it’s going, it’ll only be a couple more weeks before that record falls, too.
