James Cameron’s Avatar continues to dominate the box office, topping the rankings for the fourth straight weekend.
The Fox release took in an estimated $48.5 million, making it the best fourth-weekend gross ever and bringing the film’s domestic total to a whopping $429 million.
Overseas, Avatar did even better, grossing $143 million for the weekend ‘ an increase over last weekend’s $136 million overseas take. Avatar’s foreign take now stands at $902 million, and the film is the second-highest grossing film of all time and has a legitimate shot at toppling the all-time worldwide box office record of $1.8 billion set by Cameron’s last film, Titanic.
The new horror film Daybreakers did the best among new films, coming in fourth with $15 million, just behind Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. The romantic comedy Leap Year opened in sixth place with $9.1 million and the comedy Youth in Revolt landed in ninth place with a $7 million opening,
Disney’s The Princess and the Frog held on in 10th place, with a weekend take of $4.7 million, bringing its domestic take to $92.6 million. The only other animated film in current release, Fantastic Mr. Fox, took in $275,000 to bring its domestic total to $19.5 million.
