Sci-fi films seem to be making up for years in which the genre has largely been ignored, with Avatar and Star Trek scoring screenplay nominations from the Writers Guild of America.
The WGA Screen nominees picked James Cameron’s global juggernaut as a contender for its best original screenplay honor, while Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman’s Trek script is competing for best adapted screenplay.

Winners will be announced an the 2010 Writers Guild Awards, set for Feb. 20 at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
