A copy of Action Comics #1, published in 1938 and featuring the first appearance of Superman, has sold for the record price of $1 million.
The copy of the historic comic is graded 8.0 out of 10 by the Comics Guaranty Corp. The company has only given one higher grade, an 8.5, to a copy of Action Comics #1.
Only 100 copies of the comic are known to exist. Published by DC Comics, Action Comics #1 features the very first Superman story by the character’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
The sale was made to an undisclosed buyer on the auction site ComicConnect.com.
The previous record for the sale of a comic book was $317,000 for a 6.0 graded copy of Action Comics #1 last year.
The record could be short-lived, however, as another auction house, Heritage Collectibles, is currently offering an 8.0 graded copy of Detective Comics #27, featuring the first appearance of Batman. It is one of two copies graded an unrestored 8.0, with none having received to date a higher grade from the CGC.
