The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will highlight the most inspired and memorable uses of classical music in animation at a special event set for May 14.
What’s Opera, Doc? Animation and Classical Music will be hosted by Michael Giacchino, who won Oscars for composing the scores to the Pixar films Ratatouille and Up, with the help of Academy Music Branch governor Bruce Broughton and Pete Docter, director of Monsters, Inc. and Up.
The program will include screenings of the following short films in their entirety:
‘ Music Land (1935) Disney
‘ The Band Concert (1935) Disney
‘ Rhapsody in Rivets (1941) Warner Bros.
‘ A Corny Concerto (1943) Warner Bros.
‘ The Cat Concerto (1946) MGM/Warner Bros. (Oscar winner)
‘ Rabbit of Seville (1950) Warner Bros.
‘ What’s Opera, Doc? (1957) ‘ Warner Bros.
The program also includes the ‘Dance of the Hours’ segment from Walt Disney’s 1940 classic, Fantasia.
The event will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, , located at 8949 Wilshire Blvd., starting at 7:30 p.m.
