Avatar has set yet another record, becoming the best-selling Blu-ray release of all time by selling 2.7 million copies in North America in its first four days of release.
The film, written and directed by James Cameron, also has sold 4 million copies on DVD, putting it on pace to be a major hit in that format, as well. The film, released in December in 3D and 2D versions, has become the all-time box office champion with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales.
According to a press release from Fox, the record-setting sales show the surge in interest in the Blu-ray format, with retail sales of Blu-ray players surpassing for the first time sales of DVD players.
This release of Avatar is focused squarely upon the film, eschewing extras of any kind to use the disc’s entire storage capacity to provide the highest quality picture and sound possible.
A new edition of the film, possibly with extra footage and bonus features, is expected in the fall.
