Nightmare’s Box Office Dreams Come True; Dragon Still Strong

The remade Nightmare on Elm Street slashed its way to the top of the box office rankings, but the real story remains the continuing strong performance of the No. 2 film, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.

The 3-D feature’s $10.8 million weekend take was a distant second to Nightmare‘s $32.2 million opening. But the film, which has been in release for six weeks, has brought its domestic total to $192.4 million. Its international take is at $196 million, for a total of $388 million worldwide. No wonder DreamWorks has OK’d the sequel.

The weekend’s only other major opener was the Brendan Fraser family comedy Furry Vengeance, which took in $6.5 million and ranked fifth for the weekend.

In international news, the rest of the world got to see Iron Man 2 this past weekend and it grossed just over $100 million in 53 territories. The Marvel comic book adaptation opens in North America this week.

Other VFX and animation movies still in release include Clash of the Titans, the No. 7 movie this weekend with $5.9 million and a $154 million domestic take; Kick-Ass, which made $4.5 million this weekend for a $42 million total; Alice in Wonderland, which padded its gross with a $1.5 million weekend for a $329 million domestic total; and Avatar, which slipped to 18th place with a $635,000 weekend for a $747 million domestic total.

The Secret of Kells, which was nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar, earned an estimated $22,400 this weekend, for a 9 week total of just under $400,000.
