The 3D green ogre fended off the princesses of Sex and the City 2 and the big-screen debut of Prince of Persia to retain the title of box-office king for the Memorial Day weekend.
DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After grossed an estimated $55 million from Friday through Monday. That put the fourth ‘ and reportedly final ‘ film in the Shrek series up to a $145 million domestic gross it its first 11 days of release. Having not yet opened wide overseas, the film has an estimated $25 million in foreign receipts, making its worldwide total $171 million to date.
Newcomer Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, based on the popular video game franchise, came in second with a $37.8 million opening four-day weekend. The film did extremely well overseas, taking in $95.5 million for a worldwide total of $133 million.
New Line’s R-rated sequel Sex and the City 2 opened a sliver behind in third place with a $37.1 million four-day weekend. Sex and the City 2 got the jump on the competition by opening on Thursday, giving it a $51 million domestic total through Monday. Its overseas total of $27.6 million gives it a $79 million worldwide total.
Iron Man 2 continued to do well, taking in $20.6 million over the holiday weekend, for a domestic total of $279 million and a worldwide take of $555 million.
DreamWorks Animation’s other 3D release, How to Train Your Dragon, also did well, padding its domestic total to $213 million and its worldwide take to $448 million.
Disney’s 3D Alice in Wonderland, meanwhile, crossed the billion-dollar gross mark last week. It stands with $333 million domestic and $672 million foreign.
And the indie toon The Secret of Kells crossed the half-million dollar mark, with a domestic gross of $523,000.
