Cats & Dogs Resume Their Battle at the Box Office

The age-old battle of the house pets resumes this weekend at the box office, as Warner Bros. releases the 3D family comedy Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.

Directed by Brad Peyton, the film is a sequel to the 2001 feature Cats & Dogs, which grossed $93 million at the domestic box office. Set to be released in an estimated 3,700 theaters, the film features visual effects work from Tippett Studio, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Soho VFX.

Also opening this week are the DreamWorks comedy Dinner for Schmucks (2,900 cinemas) and the drama Charlie St. Cloud, which Universal is bowing at about 2,700 theaters.

All three major releases will be taking on Inception, which claimed the top spot for the weekend two weeks running now. Through Wednesday, the Christopher Nolan-directed movie has raked in more than $160 million in domestic ticket sales.

Animated features Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me also are still playing well. Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 has so far earned a whopping $383 million domestic and has racked up a worldwide total of $734 million. Despicable Me has sold an estimated $171 million in tickets domestically.

Also still in release are Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, adapted from the popular Nick action cartoon.
