Pixar Goes Direct to Video with Cars Spinoff Planes

Plans are percolating among the big brains at Pixar, with reports indicating the study is preparing a project called Planes, a direct-to-video spinoff of its Cars franchise.

According to Movieline, Planes is meant to expand the licensing payoff that Cars delivered when it was released in 2006. Its also the most recent sign that the studio is increasingly embracing sequels, with Cars 2 due out next summer and a sequel to Monsters, Inc. set for 2012.

Additionally, Toy Story 3‘s stereoscopic supervisor Bob Whitehill revealed in a video interview with the British website HeyUGuys.co.uk the studio is exploring a 3D conversion of Ratatouille with director Brad Bird. Check it out for yourself (the Ratatouille bit occurs about six minutes in.)

Lastly, The Wrap.com learned some of the details of Tim Allen’s contract with Pixar and find that the actor is signed on to reprise the role of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 4. While there has been no word from Pixar on making another Toy Story film, the news has raised speculation that the iconic franchise may not be done yet.
