It was another weak weekend at the box office, with new releases failing to topple last week’s champ The Expendables and animated features continuing to hold up better than live-action.
The Expendables again topped the charts with a $16 million weekend take, with the parody film Vampires Suck debuting in second place with $12.2 million, just ahead of Eat Pray Love’s $12 million. Lottery Ticket opened in fourth with $11.1 million, followed by The Other Guys with $10.1 million.
Horror film Piranha 3D opened in sixth place with about $10 million in ticket sales, followed by Nanny McPhee Returns at $8.3 million, The Switch at $8.1 million and Inception with $7.6 million.
Despicable Me was the top-ranked animated feature, landing in 11th place with $4.4 million in its seventh weekend out. The Universal-Illumination feature has grossed $230 million domestic and $65 million overseas for a $295 million total.
It landed right behind the comic-book adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which had a $5 million weekend to bring its domestic total to $20.1 million.
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore took in $1.5 million to bring its domestic total to $39 million. DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After made $265,000 in its 14th week for a domestic total of $237 million.
And Tales from Earthsea, the 2006 Studio Ghibli animated feature getting an English dubbed release, earned about $10,100 on five screens in its second weekend of a very limited run.
