Universal/Illumination delivered a nice treat to the attendees at New York Comic Con today by releasing the trailer for its 2023 feature The Super Mario Bros Movie. The movie, which features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, has been the subject of much Internet chatter from the very early days of development.

The Illumination feature is directed by animation veterans Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, The Drawn Together Movie), with a script by Matthew Fogel, who also wrote Minions: The Rise of Gru and The LEGO Movie 2. The official synopsis reads: “A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother Luigi, trying to save a captured princess.”
Nintendo’s popular game, which was first introduced in 1983 as an arcade game, centers on Italian twin brothers plumber Mario and Luigi who try to exterminate creatures emerging from the sewers by knocking them upside down and kicking them away!
The Super Mario Bros Movie opens on Easter weekend, April 7.
