Statement Animation Greenlights Adult Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Somewhere Else’

Today, Statement Animation, a Canadian animation company under Statement Worldwide, announced the official greenlight of Somewhere Else, a new adult-targeted sci-fi comedy animated series created by Matthew Celestial. The series, which begins production this month in Toronto, marks Statement Animation’s first original IP and Celestial’s debut as executive producer on an animated television project.

The series is being positioned for multi-platform expansion, with further announcements around distribution, release timing and the show’s director and co-writers to follow.

About the Series: Somewhere Else follows Bevis and Rob, two emotionally exhausted astronauts on a desperate search for a new planet to call home after Earth’s collapse. But with each new world they land on, they discover something deeply unsettling: every civilization is hiding. From what, no one knows. Inspired by the Dark Forest Theory, the series blends interstellar dread with comedy and subtle existentialism.

At its core, Somewhere Else is a story about loneliness, survival and what it means to believe in connection when the entire universe is suspicious of belonging.

“After years of working alongside some of the most visionary creators in animation, I’ve come to deeply respect how this medium allows us to tell stories that are both wildly imaginative and deeply human,” said Celestial. “Somewhere Else is a love letter to that idea, a weird, funny, heartfelt escape from the noise of daily life, built with care, craft and community. I’m beyond excited to bring this series to life and to collaborate with artists and storytellers who are just as committed to saying something meaningful through comedy.

“The animation industry, and so many friends within it, have taken hard hits over the past year. But I remain committed to bringing new opportunities for the community: to create, to learn and to produce content that reminds us there’s still room for wonder, even in uncertain times.”

Celestial is a veteran animation publicist and strategist. Over the past decade, he has collaborated with globally respected studios and organizations including Nelvana, Kids Can Press, PBS/Frontline, Disney, DreamWorks, 13AM GAMES, HaZimation, WIA Vancouver, Spark CG Society and the Toronto Animation Arts Festival International, among others. Celestial began his entertainment career in field marketing at Paramount Pictures before handling Canadian field publicity campaigns for Searchlight Pictures.

As part of Statement Animation’s long-term vision, Somewhere Else is being developed as a transmedia intellectual property, including:

  • Graphic novels and digital comic adaptations
  • Interactive web experiences and character-driven mini-games exploring the Dark Forest Theory
  • Apparel, collectibles and limited-edition merchandise

Founded by Celestial, Statement Animation began as a boutique PR firm dedicated exclusively to animated film and television. In 2024, the company expanded its scope, moving into distribution, licensing and co-productions. Today marks the studio’s further expansion into original content production.
