‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sing-Along Event Sells Out as Netflix Hit Regains No. 1 Movie Rank

The unstoppable songstresses of Netflix’s Sony Pictures Animation-produced animated feature KPop Demon Hunters show no signs of slowing down their whirlwind rise to fame. With the two-day theatrical Sing-Along Event set to hit theaters across North America this weekend (August 23 & 24), The Hollywood Reporter shared insider info that the screenings have been picked up by 1,700 theaters and counting across the U.S. & Canada, with 1,000 showtimes sold out as of late Tuesday. Venues include major chains Regal Cinemas  and Cinemark as well as Alamo Drafthouse, Laemmle and more.

Fans can find participating locations and showtimes at singkpopdemonhunters.com.

Synopsis: When they aren’t selling out stadiums, Kpop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.

KPop Demon Hunters is directed by Maggie Kang (head of story, The LEGO Ninjago Movie) and Chris Appelhans (Wish Dragon). The voice cast is led by Arden Cho (Rumi), May Hong (Mira) and Ji-young Yoo (Zoey) voicing heroic trio HUNTR/X, and Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, the leader of the demonic boy band Saja Boys. Ian Eisendrath as executive music producer.

Meanwhile, the latest Netflix Top 10 lists (week of August 11-17) track KPop Demon Hunters back to the No. 1 spot on the English Film List with another 26 million views nine weeks post-premiere. The music-fueled adventures is both the streamer’s most popular animated film of all time and the first animated film to rank on its Most Popular Movies List (English).

The film’s soundtrack also continues its record-breaking run: KPop Demon Hunters became the first soundtrack since Waiting To Exhale in 1995 to chart three songs in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously (more than 3 billion global streams as of last week); and the film’s lead single “Golden” by HUNTR/X (or Huntrix) became the first song by a girl group to hit No. 1 on the chart since “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child nearly 25 years ago.

Aspiring Huntrixes will also be stoked to know that this week, Netflix launched a slew of official merch across retailers including Hot Topic and Amazon, following the straight-from-the-screen products launch on the Netflix Shop. A range of illustrations featuring HUNTR/X, Saja Boys, the supernatural critters Derpy and Sussie as well as band logos and design elements pulled from the flick feature in these eye popping collections.

Fans can find a range of products including apparel (tees, sweatshirts, joggers/leggings, hats, etc.), accessories (patches, phone cases, fanny packs), home goods and games (mouse pads, drinkware, puzzles, posters) and many other items to make every element of their lives golden.

Of course, audience-created content is also fueling the KPop Demon Hunters sensation, including fan art and covers of the movie’s addictive earworms. One piece that caught our eye this week is this very cool, candy-colored short by digital artist Preston Mutanga, shared by outlets including 80LV.

Mutanga, who at just 14 years old was enlisted to work on a LEGO animation sequence for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, crafted a 13-second fanimation inspired by KPop Demon Hunters which reimagines the HUNTR/X heroine as minifigs set to a driving song clip and laced with impressive effects that even caught the eye of director Maggie Kang.
