Adult Swim SMALLS is delivering another surreal take on everyday life next week, announcing the premiere of Gummy Mummy on Wednesday, September 3. The short will launch on the indie animation incubator’s YouTube channel.
From U.K. animation filmmaker Lydia Reid, Gummy Mummy is an irreverent flight of fancy inspired by old wives’ tales about the dangers of swallowing chewing gum. In the vibrantly illustrated short, a young girl ignores such warnings, and years later comes face to face with the well-masticated consequences of her decision.
Reid is a London-based director and animator, who employs both analog and digital techniques in her work which often explores themes of self-love, gender and freedom. Notably, Reid created the 2019 short You’re Fit, which screened at a number of festivals around the U.K. and internationally and was awarded the 2020 RTS London Student Award for Animation.
