Ahead of its market debut at MIPJunior & MIPCOM this fall, the 3D CG animated feature Wukong Warrior has dropped an action-packed new first look trailer, introducing audiences to this new iteration of Journey to the West‘s famous Monkey King.
The project hails from China’s Mili Pictures, producers of the Dragon Nest films Warriors’ Dawn & Throne of Elves, and recently attached the producer of the $4 billion High School Musical franchise, Bill Borden, to spearhead the international rollout of Wukong Warrior. Additionally, Disney Media Distribution veteran Todd Barasch has joined Summit International to oversee licensing of Wukong Warrior globally outside of China.
Five hundred years ago, he defied Heaven itself and paid the ultimate price. Now, the most mischievous rebel in all of mythology is back — and he’s about to take over the world.
The mythical warrior Sun Wukong can transform into 72 different forms, travel 55,000 kilometers in a single somersault, and wield a magical staff that can shrink to the size of a needle or grow to support the heavens … But his greatest battle isn’t against demons or dragons — it’s against his own pride.
Joined by a comically greedy pig-warrior, a sorrowful river demon, a scheming fox spirit and Little Peach — a brave monkey girl who believes in heroes.
The first of a planned three-film saga from Mili Pictures, Wukong Warrior hits Chinese theaters in September 2025, with international buyers getting their first look at MIPJunior and MIPCOM, October 11-16 in Cannes.
