On the heels of Netflix announcing that KPop Demon Hunters has become its most popular English-language film of all time (with 236 million views since its June 20th premiere), Deadline reports that the streamer is in early talks with Sony Pictures Animation about working on a sequel. The big-hearted, energetic animated musical had another weekend on top of Netflix’s most-watched list with near 0% decline.
This weekend, the Maggie Kang- and Chris Appelhans-directed movie also broke another record for Netflix, becoming the streamer’s first No.1 movie at the box-office. The sold-out Sing-Along version of the movie brought in an estimated $19.2 million from Saturday and Sunday screenings in the U.S.

“We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” Maggie Kang told ew.com. “What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?”There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show.” Kang continued, “I think that was one of the hardest things we kept getting asked: ‘Please show us this.’ ‘I think the audience is going to want to know this or that,'” Kang explained. “We just made decisions to be like, ‘Nope, that is not essential to this story for this movie, and maybe that can be shown some other time.’ The director said she can reveal more of that in the sequel.
In addition, the film’s soundtrack was able to land four songs on the Billboard Top 10 list simultaneously, which marked the first time this ever happened in the history of the Hot 100.(Sorry, Saturday Night Fever, Grease, The Body Guard, Footloose and Purple Rain!). KPop Demon Hunters features HUNTR/X’s “Golden,” which first hit the No. 1 spot on August 16, “How It’s Done,” and Saja Boys’ “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop.”
