Watch: Epic New Trailer for Mamoru Hosoda’s Upcoming Feature ‘Scarlet’ Debuts Online

There’s always a great level of excitement amongst animation fans when a new film from Japanese auteur Mamoru Hosoda is about to be released. The much-loved director — whose oeuvre includes The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Miria and Belle—will be unveiling his latest film, Scarlet, at the Venice Film Festival in September.

Hosoda

Slated for a November release in Japan and a Dec. 12 release in the U.S. via Sony, the movie tells the story of a fearless princess who transcends time and space. In the film, Scarlet leaps across space and time to get revenge for her father’s murder. Along the way, she meets a modern-day Japanese man named Hijiri who helps her in her dangerous mission. Producers are Yuichiro Saito and Nozomu Takahashi (Studio Chizu) and Toshimi Tanio (Nippon TV).

Of course, we’re planning a big feature about the movie for our December 2025 issue as well!
