Is FOX Animation Hit ‘The Great North’ at an End?

After months of speculation as to whether an official renewal would be coming from FOX, it seems fans’ worst fears are coming true. The Instagram account NorthToWharf, described as an “unofficial one stop destination for Bento Box information” (referring to the FOX-owned animation studio), has posted a farewell and thank you message to the team behind The Great North. It looks like the Annie Award and Critics Choice nominated show may not be returning after the recently concluded fifth season.

“We don’t know what the futures hold, but given some of the recent posts we’ve been seeing we wanted to take the time to send our most heartfelt thank you to everyone who has ever worked on @greatnorthfox,” the post reads. “… We hope there are more trips to Lone Moose in the future.”

We have not seen similar posts on the official accounts for the show, Bento Box or the series co-creators Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.

Concerns for the show’s future were raised back in May, when The Great North was not included in FOX’s renewal announcements for its animated series Grimsburg, Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys. The Fall “Animation Domination” premiere lineup this year, announced in July, set new season debuts for The Simpson’s, Bob’s Burgers, Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys on September 28.

Premiered in 2021, The Great North is an animated comedy series following the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as single dad Beef (Nick Offerman) does his best to keep his bunch of kids close — especially his only daughter, Judy (Jenny Slate), whose artistic dreams lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall. Rounding out the family are Judy’s older brother, Wolf (Will Forte), and his wife, Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan), middle brother Ham (Paul Rust) and 10-year-old-going-on-50 little brother Moon (Aparna Nancherla). While their mother is not in the picture, Judy seeks guidance from her boss, Alyson (Megan Mullally), and her imaginary friend, Alanis Morissette (voicing herself), who appears to her in the Northern Lights.

The series was created and written by Bob’s Burgers executive producers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, as well as writer Minty Lewis (Regular Show). The Molyneux sisters serve as executive producers and showrunners. Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard is also an executive producer. The Great North is a 20th Television Animation production, and animation is produced through Bento Box Entertainment.

The Great North is available to stream on Hulu.
