From October 15-19, film lovers will gather in the scenic Catskill Mountains for the 2025 Woodstock Film Festival — an Oscar-qualifying competitions in all three short film categories (animation, narrative/live action and documentary). The lineup for the 26th edition features 112 selected films set to screen at venues in Woodstock, N.Y., as well as Rosendale, Kingston and Saugerties.
This year’s lineup includes a diverse selection of 28 animated shorts, spanning folkloric whimsy as in Nathan Engelhardt and Jeremy Spears’ Forevergreen, bold visual experiments like Adam J. Fuchs’ Phantasmagoric and entries from animation stars such as Whale 52 from two-time Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and Daniel Neiden. Other highlights include 1981, a Long Island coming-of-age story; Butterfly Kiss, a fantastical love story; and Little Shrew (Snowflake), written, directed, and storyboarded by musician Kate Bush and performed by her son, Albert McIntosh.
“The shorts program has always been a vital part of the Woodstock Film Festival,” said Meira Blaustein, Woodstock Film Festival Co-Founder & Executive Director. “These films amplify voices and stories that speak directly to the world we’re living in today, while also reminding us of the incredible artistry and innovation possible in short form.”
“Our shorts blocks are programmed across genres and across common themes such as comedy in an uncertain world, displacement and community repossession, and the pain and joy of artists admitting their truths,” said Amanda Naseem, Head Shorts Programmer. “Films are in conversation with one another, encouraging deeper meaning and interpretation for our audience. - It’s 1981 in suburban Long Island, New York. The mullets are long, the metal is heavy and 14-year old Douglas gets a birthday surprise that will change life forever.
