‘Simpsons Movie’ Sequel to Launch in 2027 after Two Decades

Time runs a little different when you’re the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history: Disney-owned 20th Century Studios and The Simpsons official social feeds today revealed that “Homer’s coming back for seconds” in an all-new theatrical animated feature on July 23, 2027 — 20 years after the release of The Simpsons Movie.

The post includes a teaser poster by creator Matt Groening which shows Homer’s grasping hand picking up a pink-frosted donut dusted with “2” sprinkles.

The date announcement swaps the tentatively titled The Simpsons Movie 2 in for an untitled Marvel project on the Disney Studios feature film calendar.

Details of the Simpsons sequel are yet to be revealed. The first feature film, released in July 2007, racked up $536 million. The project was budgeted at $75 million, and was directed by David Silverman from a screenplay by other series veterans including Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Mike Scully, Jon Vitti and others. Silverman revealed that a sequel was in “the very earliest stages of development” back in 2017.

Nominated for Best Animated Feature honors by the Golden Globes, BAFTAs (where it won the Kids’ Vote prize) and Annie Awards, the core plot of The Simpsons Movie kicks off when Homer (Dan Castellaneta) pollutes Springfield’s water supply with a silo full of pig feces from his beloved new pet, Plopper, leading President Arnold Schwarzenegger to seal the town under a giant glass dome. The ensuing hysteria turns the townsfolk against the Simpsons (Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith), and they flee through a convenient sinkhole to start a new life in Alaska. But when their beloved Springfield is in danger, it’s up to the maligned Simpson family to save the day.

Premiered on FOX in 1990 after running as a segment on The Tracy Ullman Show, Groening’s The Simpsons is the longest-running animated series and sitcom on television. Winner of 27 Emmy Awards, as well as many Annie Awards and the first Peabody Award bestowed on an animated series, the show has been renewed through to a 40th season which will air in 2028-2029.
